Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) has been supporting the lives of children and adults, and their families on Long Island for over 50 years. During that time, DDI has evolved and grown, serving a growing population with innovative supports and services we provide. Throughout this evolution DDI has always delivered on its mission; To help children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities experience growth and fulfillment.
DDI provides educational, vocational and residential programs for over 1,800 children and adults, making it the largest provider of services for Long Islanders diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Why do we need your support?
The government reimbursements and tuition payments that DDI receives for providing services to children and adults with disabilities do not fully cover the costs of providing services. In many instances, DDI’s programs operate at a deficit. In recent years especially, government reimbursement supports have been cut, while tuition payments for special education services have been stagnant. DDI struggles to contend with such challenges while it is confronted with increasing numbers of people who require services, and increasing inflationary. We need contributions to help us bridge this worsening funding gap to ensure that the people we serve are provided the very best care possible.
Many DDI facilities are well over 50 years old and require significant renovations and repairs. The ongoing maintenance and efforts to enhance DDI’s main buildings is essential to ensuring safe, comfortable, efficient and inviting work and service delivery environments. Tuition funding does not provide for such costs. Building improvements and renovations expenses are almost entirely supported through charitable donations.
Significant investment in our Information Technology (IT) infrastructure has become a major priority for DDI so that DDI’s children and adults can have the opportunity to reap its educational and lifestyle benefits, just as their non-developmentally disabled peers do. The increasing number of people receiving services from DDI and the increased number of facilities where services are being provided, require significant IT investment not covered by government reimbursement or tuition payment. We need to keep pace with this ever-expanding field, and to ensure that our educational programming offers the best tools at our disposal to help those we serve. Finally, our pursuit of research, community outreach, collaboration opportunities and other strategies to ensure Program Excellence will also require heightened levels of investment in our IT infrastructure. These Information Technology needs can only be met with charitable donations.

Cash Donations are fully tax-deductible, up to 50% of your adjusted gross income, and are acceptable (in any form). Checks should be made payable to the DDI Foundation. In addition, DDI offers donors the opportunity to make recurring gifts throughout the year through the use of credit or debit cards.
Matching Gifts- Many companies offer matching gift programs to encourage employees to contribute to charitable organizations and match contributions dollar for dollar, and some will even double or triple the amount of your gift! Please ask with your employer to see if they offer this program. You
Gifts of Appreciated Stock – DDI accepts both publicly traded securities and closely held securities. Donated stocks, held for more than one year, may offer you substantial tax savings because by donating stock rather than selling it, you avoid capital gains tax. Your gift of such stock is fully tax-deductible, up to 30% of your adjusted gross income, with the deduction based on the average high and low quoted trading price of the stock on the day control is transferred to the Foundation. Gifts in excess of 30% may be carried over the succeeding five years.
Gifts of Real Estate may include developed or undeveloped property and may offer you substantial tax savings. As with Appreciated Stock, if the property has increased in value since you purchased it you avoid capital gains tax by donating the property rather than selling it. Please note, the DDI Foundation reserves the right to reject a donation of real estate if there are environmental or other concerns associated with the property.
Wills and Bequests allow you to ensure your charitable support of the DDI Foundation will continue. Bequests are fully tax deductible for federal estate tax purposes, and may be deductible on your state estate taxes as well.
Life Insurance Policies can name DDI as the beneficiary and irrevocable owner of a given policy. Such gifts to the Foundation are valued at their interpolated terminal reserve value or cash surrender value at the time they are received – and any additional premium payments you make will be recorded by the Foundation as a gift in the years they are made. IRA’s, 401-k, and 403-b is another example of how you can include the Foundation as a beneficiary.
