Skill-Building with Osmo

Osmo is an interactive game system for use with iPads and iPhones.  Osmo games are mirrored through an iPad or iPhone onto a flat surface.  Playing beyond the screen invites individuals to manipulate tangible game pieces, such as number tiles, letter tiles, and coding blocks. This promotes hands-on skill-building through play, enabling the iPad to merge the power of physical play with the digital advantages of real-time feedback.

At DDI, individuals in Adult Day Services engage with Osmo in a variety of ways.  Osmo is available on at least one iPad at each site so adults can work individually or in pairs.  Adults can engage with Osmo by mirroring games on the Smartboard and Apple TV.  This ensures that all participants of a group can observe the game on a larger screen rather than struggling to view the smaller iPad surrounded by several individuals.

Osmo’s growing collection of apps for iPad crosses multiple subject areas and includes various challenge levels for individuals of differing abilities.  Individuals experiment, explore, create, and collaborate at their own pace through seven (7) different games: Tangram, Words, Masterpiece, Coding Awbie, Coding Jam, Numbers, and Newton.  These programs foster a variety of skills, including critical thinking and communication.
