Timmy’s Team Goes the Distance to Provide a Track for DDI!
As autumn leaves swirled, mirroring the energy of the TCS New York City Marathon, the DDI Little Plains Campus in Huntington buzzed with its own exciting event: the grand opening of its brand-new track. Students of all ages and abilities, some independently and others with supportive assistance, eagerly explored the fresh asphalt. Along the course, engaging therapeutic games offered playful breaks, while a hydration station provided water and orange slices before the final dash across the finish line. Cheers echoed for every participant, culminating in joyful medal and trophy presentations.
This wonderful addition was made possible through the ongoing efforts of Timmy’s Team, a fundraising initiative established in 2014 by the Long family. Inspired by their son Tim, who receives support from DDI, marathon runner Kevin Long has dedicated himself to this cause, completing ten marathons and raising over $150,000 for organizations serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), with DDI being a primary beneficiary.
The Long family’s connection with DDI began over two decades ago when Tim, who has both Down Syndrome and autism, enrolled in Early Intervention Services. He further benefited from DDI's nurturing Early Childhood Program, receiving specialized instruction and therapy during his preschool years. More recently, DDI provided crucial support during Tim's transition from his school-based program to an adult day program.
The family's commitment to DDI started almost immediately after Tim began receiving services. Kevin served on DDI's Board of Directors for more than fifteen years. His daughter Emily volunteered in the Development Department one summer, and his other daughter Abigail briefly worked as a teaching assistant at DDI's Children's Day Program in Smithtown.
Abigail had shared with her father the immense value of the track at the Smithtown campus, highlighting its role in providing exercise and an outlet for students. Upon learning that the Little Plains campus lacked a similar facility, the decision was made to raise the $20,000 needed for its construction. This campus serves hundreds of students, from preschool through age 21, and is home to 24 children who might otherwise require out-of-state placement due to a shortage of local residential options.
“Physical activity is so important for a healthy lifestyle, and this is especially true for our students with autism and developmental disabilities, who can be more susceptible to certain health concerns,” noted Amy Brand, an Adaptive Physical Education Teacher at DDI. "Our walking club and Adaptive Physical Education classes make a great use of the track to improve cardiovascular health, including DDI staff who walk the track during their breaks.”
According to Kevin Long, "The track at DDI is thanks to the incredible generosity of family, friends, colleagues, former classmates, and even kind strangers who learned about Timmy's Team. DDI relies on fundraising for vital projects like this track, and we are proud to support this extraordinary organization."
DDI extends its deepest gratitude to Timmy’s Team and its more than 125 compassionate supporters who made this wonderful addition possible. Every contribution to DDI makes a difference.
